The year 2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the visit to Vermont by the explorer Samuel de Champlain. On Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m., historian Paul Searls discusses Champlain's vision for society and how it might be applied to contemporary life.

Dr. Searls has taught at Lyndon State College since 2005 and is currently chair of the social sciences depart­ment. He received his PhD from New York University and taught at the University of Vermont from 1996 to 2005. He is author of Two Vermonts: Geography and Identity, 1865-1910.
